Mona's mother Helen, does not see eye to eye on everything with Mona. This could be one of the reasons Helen was so upset at Mona converting to Judaism. Helen doesn't agree with Mona when she talks about how she wants to switch; Helen is stubborn. On page 49, Helen says "American, not Jewish", Mona replies saying "Jewish is American". American means being whatever you want, and I happened to pick being Jewish.". I think that Mona feels as though she can do what she wants being American; however, Helen doesn't agree that being Jewish is the American way. Helen as Mona's mother, wants her daughter to grow up in America but she thinks switching/converting to Judaism isn't the way.
