Mona's mom doesn't want Mona to be Jewish because she doesn't want her being anything else besides Chinese and that she might want to change other traits about herself. Mona's mom says that she would accept if Mona was American not Jewish; however, Mona believes that you can be both American and Jewish as Jewish is a religion and America is not. Mona's mom is also angry because she thinks if she can pick to convert religions that she may want to change other stuff about her; yet Mona's mom doesn't know if Mona will change anything else but she is still worried about that. For example, Mona's mom thinks that Mona might want to be black or a boy instead of a girl. Overall, Mona's mom doesn't like the idea of Mona converting to become Jewish because she is worried she might want to change other things about herself and also because she doesn't want her being anything but Chinese.
