In Helen's eyes, Mona's conversion to Judaism makes her look bad; however, Mona doesn't care what people think of her and her family. The way Helen was raised in a traditional Chinese family, it was her duty to do whatever her parents said and never go against them. Mona not only converting, but also keeping it from her parents makes them feel like they don't have a daughter at all anymore; at least, not a good one in her parents opinions based on how they were raised.
