Callie is trying to find her self-identity as a Chinese American; labeling things as being either Chinese or American is one way way she is trying to do this. It also seems she is also being influenced by her peers at college. She wants to promote Chinese americans such as her family to have an identity independent of the one forced onto them; however, in doing this she is actually asking them to take away part of their identity as Americans, like the christmas tree. Callie is trying to figure her and her families culture out and labeling is the way she is doing this, which is the cause of her obsession with what is American and what is Chinese.
