Helen doesn't want Mona switch to Judaism; however, she had switched from being Buddhist to Catholic in the past. The main reason that Helen doesn't want Mona to do so is because she believes that Chinese people wouldn't do such a thing and that Mona is betraying her by both lying and acting non-Chinese. While Mona studies Judaism, she never tells her mother that she is doing so; Mona keeping a secret from her mother makes Helen feel like she is being a bad daughter and lying to her. Also, when Mona tells Helen about switching to Judaism, Helen is immediately afraid of Chinese people judging Mona for doing something so extreme. This means that in Helen's eyes, Mona switching to Judaism is betraying their culture. Therefore, the main reason why Helen is mad at Mona is because Mona is betraying both her and other Chinese people.
